UCSB #noDAPL Day of Action & Demand of UC Divest from DAPL
February 2, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 12:45 pm
Join your fellow students across the University of California this Thursday as we stand with the water protectors at Standing Rock in their battle against the Dakota Access Pipeline, and demand that the UC Regents divest all holdings from the decadent fossil fuel industry, including the two companies behind DAPL.
MEET US THURSDAY at NOON in the grass at LOT 22 across from the SRB. At noon, we will start with an opening prayer from an indigenous member of the community. We will follow with 3 speakers and announcements from any community activists (GET IN TOUCH WITH US IF YOU’D LIKE TO SPEAK!), and a flute performance from an indigenous activist artist. We are hoping to bring together as many groups as possible to come together for this solidarity action.
Support from the student body is overwhelming, yet the University of California remains directly invested in Energy Transfer Partners and Sunoco Logistics, two corporations that fund DAPL and collectively operate over 75,000 miles of oil pipelines. As a global leader in environmental sustainability and the public university that invests more in climate action than any other in the world, there is no reason why the UC still has over $1.7 Billion invested in an industry whose business model ensures that we, as students, will have no future to enact our education onto.
It should come as no surprise that Donald Trump is also directly invested in the Dakota Access Pipeline and his appointee for Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, is the long-time CEO of the largest oil company in the world. Now more than ever we must reject climate denialism and urge our Board of Regents to put people over profits and DIVEST FROM FOSSIL FUELS.
