The Ecological Coalition (a.k.a. the “E-Coalition”), is a network for campus-based environmental, ecological, and sustainability-oriented groups.
There is a huge array of environmentally-minded organizations at UCSB. And although each one is very different in its size and scope, in one way or another, all of the clubs seek to make our campus, our community, and in turn our planet, a healthier and happier place to live.
The E-Coalition serves to coordinate the efforts of member groups, ease communication, provide updates on various campaigns, gather extra volunteers for projects or events, and generate publicity and recognition through the joining of forces.

Who are we? Since the program’s inception in 1992, AS Recycling, with the help of the Department of Conservation, has purchased over 75 state-of-the-art recycling clusters made from 100% post-consumer plastic. These Clusters which capture most of the outdoor recyclables on campus, have brought the UCSB community closer to its goal of recycling virtually all recyclable materials generated on campus. The collection of recyclables, which utilizes student workers and tricycles with attached carts, has proven enormously effective in reducing the amount of waste produced on our campus.
NOW HIRING! Student Coordinator Open Positions: Recycling and Electronic Waste Routes Coordinator, Composting and Gardening Coordinator, Outreach and Special Event Coordinator (Each pays $10.50/hr). Leadership experience is required. Submit an application, resume, and cover letter to the AS Administration Office on the 2nd floor of the Multicultural Center. Who are we? For 25 years, students who have been involved with their CALPIRG campus chapter have not only learned how to investigate a problem and come up with a practical solution. We’ve also learned how to convince the media and decision-makers to pay attention and take action. In other words, through CALPIRG we gain an educational experience in democratic citizenship. In addition, we get a chance to face up to society’s big problems, take action, and win concrete changes that improve the quality of our lives.

FeelGood is a youth movement, a social enterprise whose mission is to “end world hunger, one grilled cheese at a time.” FeelGood empowers college students to run non-profit Delis on their campuses, giving away gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches in exchange for a donation. At these FeelGood Delis, students develop hands-on skills necessary to run a business, launch effective educational campaigns, and initiate substantive dialogue about the root causes of and solutions to hunger, and our responsibilities as global citizens. 100% of the profits the students raise are invested in organizations with a proven track record of sustainably eradicating extreme global hunger and empowering self-reliance. Do Good. FeelGood.

Who are we? The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) was created by students in the spring of 2006 with a charge to ”reduce the University’s impact on the environment.” Students voted with an overwhelming majority to pay $2.60 per quarter, contributing approximately $182,000 a year towards TGIF. Any student, staff, or faculty member of the University community can submit a project proposal to the TGIF Grants Making Committee. The committee is comprised of four undergraduates, two graduates, one staff, and one faculty member.

Who are we? The Greenhouse and Garden Project is an enjoyable and educational organization at UCSB that welcomes students, faculty, and staff to maintain their own plot to garden on. Many students live in apartments that do not allow anywhere to plant a garden, which is what makes the GHGP so unique. We currently have over fifty members, each with their own plot(s) and full access to the greenhouse. With potlucks and meetings once per quarter, it gives members a chance to interact with other gardeners, help with the upkeep of the whole garden/greenhouse, and discuss current issues.

Who are we? The Laboratory Research and Technical Support (LabRATS) program at UCSB connects laboratory managers, students, career staff and faculty with each other and with operations staff. We increase resource efficiency and quality of research while using practices that leave the smallest environmental footprint possible. We create a culture of collaboration that values sustainable practices as a top priority in laboratory settings.
It is a fundamental belief of LabRATS participants that most scientists want to use the most pro-active conservation measures possible, and LabRATS connects academic scientists with the sustainability movement.
