Student-Led Programs

The Ecological Coalition (a.k.a. the “E-Coalition”), is a network for campus-based environmental, ecological, and sustainability-oriented groups.

There is a huge array of environmentally-minded organizations at UCSB. And although each one is very different in its size and scope, in one way or another, all of the clubs seek to make our campus, our community, and in turn our planet, a healthier and happier place to live.

The E-Coalition serves to coordinate the efforts of member groups, ease communication, provide updates on various campaigns, gather extra volunteers for projects or events, and generate publicity and recognition through the joining of forces.

Who are we? The Laboratory Research and Technical Support (LabRATS) program at UCSB connects laboratory managers, students, career staff and faculty with each other and with operations staff. We increase resource efficiency and quality of research while using practices that leave the smallest environmental footprint possible. We create a culture of collaboration that values sustainable practices as a top priority in laboratory settings.

It is a fundamental belief of LabRATS participants that most scientists want to use the most pro-active conservation measures possible, and LabRATS connects academic scientists with the sustainability movement.

Learn about LabRATS current campaigns

    Campaigns/Projects:

  • Laboratory Assessments: This comprehensive evaluation of laboratory practices works with researchers to make labs efficient and low-impact.
  • Surplus Equipment: We are evaluating supply and demand for high value used apparatus and facilitating administration and incentives (a.k.a. money) for transfers.
  • Chemical Exchange: We joined EH&S to set up and promote the exchange of clean surplus chemicals instead of sending them to waste.
  • Mercury Thermometer Exchange: Also, in conjunction with EH&S, we received a grant to exchange spirit thermometers for mercury models to avoid health and clean-up impacts.
  • Campus Network: This list serve aims to connect researchers in every science department to facilitate the exchange of technical ideas, equipment needs, and surpluses.
  • Hoods Off: This campaign is focused on older lab buildings where individual hood fans may be turned off for prolonged periods when not in use.
  • Efficient Appliances: Initiated by Labs21, we work with energy managers and researchers in a nationwide effort to promote, test, and manufacture efficient apparatus.
  • Freezer Exchange: We are encouraging laboratories to take advantage of SCE’s rebate (up to $100) and pick-up program to eliminate old inefficient refrigerators and freezers.
  • Bulb-free: We initiated a program with Facilities and Maintenance to remove unneeded fluorescent bulbs in older buildings and to mark the fixtures to promote targeted lighting.
