Tips for Talking about Sustainability

Getting people to change their habits and choose environmentally preferable actions is difficult. Ever tried getting a group of people to start recycling, buy organic foods, or use a bike more? Simply informing them of the problem is not enough to get them to change their behavior. People know smoking causes lung cancer, but they still do it. In a similar way, knowing that driving contributes to climate change does not necessarily make us stop doing it. So what do the experts say about how to best promote sustainable behavior in people? One method being used more and more...

UCSB: The test case for a bikeable commu...

When I came to UCSB as a student years ago, I had biked to school two times in the probably (180X13=) 2340 days that I attended K-12. In the radically transformative life step that is moving to college, I and 50% of my fellow incoming class started biking to campus, EVERY DAY.  I had to buy gloves for the winter morning cold (very un-southern California), use a plastic bag on the seat for rainy days, and learn to lock a bike like I meant it (not thru the front wheel people!) In taking on this daily ride, I went through what researchers might call ‘behavior...

UCSB’s Don Lubach Loves to Bike!

Don Lubach is the Associate Dean of Students for the Division of Student Affairs and can most often be found on his bicycle.  Don is a strong supporter of UCSB’s Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), which has helped him enjoy what he calls “the best work commute in America.”  TAP equips UCSB  students, staff, and faculty with the resources they need to reduce their impact on the environment by choosing alternative modes of transportation (bus, bike, vanpool, and carpool) to commute to and from campus. Most recently, Don was interviewed by the...

UC for Clean Energy

UC for Clean Energy is a student run clean energy campaign working towards making UCSB the first public university in the world to adopt a 100% clean energy policy. UC for Clean Energy is made up of seven core members and over 100 volunteers. We plan to be the bridge between students, student groups, researchers, and faculty to foster clean energy initiatives. We hope to partner with our campus, our faculty, and our students, to become part of a movement that will literally change the world. The support we’ve received so far has been incredible.  We have gathered nearly...

Recyclemania

Do you love UCSB? Become a Recycle-Maniac to help UCSB win RECYCLEMANIA! Recyclemania is a national waste reduction competition between universities. UCSB is competing in the categories of waste minimization, per capita classic, and food service organics. The competition is 8 weeks long and runs until April, 12th. We are currently high in the rankings for food service organics, at 16th place among 134 competing schools. UCSB’s pre-consumer compost program in the dining commons and post-consumer Compost Pilot Project help us excel in this category. Continue composting...

The Zero Waste Committee

With a student body of over 21,000, UCSB’s production and treatment of waste is an extremely significant and highly relevant issue. Today, some of the most pressing environmental issues revolve around waste, in terms of production, consumption and the methods of treatment applied afterwards. UCSB’s Zero Waste Committee (ZWC) was formed after the success of the 2012 Compost Pilot Project. It continues in its endeavor to ensure that all waste products are recycled or composted by 2020, aiding UCSB in reaching the UC system-wide goal of zero waste by 2020. Waste is a...
