Currently, few laboratory appliances include energy conserving features. In collaboration with a nationwide group of energy managers and campus experts coordinated by Labs21, LabRATS contributes ideas about appliance use and basic energy data. At UCSB, we are comparing use patterns and energy consumption of autoclaves. This group collaborates with testing agencies and manufacturers to promote and develop energy efficient ovens, refrigerators, centrifuges, incubators, and other apparatus, especially heating and cooling appliances and instruments. Stanford University is moving this initiative along by putting together a purchasing guide. Contact Paul Mathew at Labs21 to participate in appliance energy efficiency data gathering or the latest information. (PAMathew@lbl.gov)
